Every place below has closed, moved, been rebuilt or reopened under a different name — and in most cases its own website, its maps listing or a guide that reviewed it still says otherwise. That is the whole problem: the things a search reads are the things that are wrong.
Bar Americano has been shut since December 2022. baramericano.com still advertises Thursday to Saturday trading.
This list is maintained by hand and read straight out of the same records that sit behind the plans plansorted builds — so a closure recorded here is a closure the chat will warn you about, and the two cannot disagree. Where a place is backed by publications or agencies we read, they are named beside it.
Nothing is listed on a hunch. Where a status could not be established from a source we assess, the place is left off rather than guessed at, which is why some closures you may know about are not here yet.

The NOBBIES CENTRE, its cafe and its toilets are CLOSED — only the boardwalks and carpark are open. Nearest food and toilets are the Penguin Parade visitor centre. The Boulevard between the Nobbies and the Penguin Parade is open to moving traffic only, no parking.

The Engine House and the Engine House walking track are CLOSED — a landslip hit the track and engineering inspections have closed entry to the building itself. There is no drinking water beyond the Quarantine Station. Cars cannot go past Gunners Cottage; it is 2.3km from the entrance car park to the Quarantine Station before you even start.

CLOSED since 1 December 2025 and does not reopen until 2028 — a $45M redevelopment, construction started February 2026. The collection is in offsite storage, though an offsite exhibition program runs in Bendigo. Google still lists it as open.

CLOSED since 3 March 2025 for HVAC and building works. Originally due back early 2026, now delayed to mid-2027 with the rehang after that. Backspace Gallery has relocated to 43 Mair Street and Art Screen continues at Alfred Deakin Place.

CLOSED since late September 2025 for redevelopment. The reopening estimate has already slipped from mid-2026 to late 2026, so check before travelling. A pop-up runs at 75 Bridge Street East, daily except Tuesdays.

CLOSED since April 2024, reopening October 2026 as the Ian Potter State Theatre. Hamer Hall and the Playhouse are unaffected and open — do not write off the whole Arts Centre.

CLOSED 6-31 July 2026 for a $2.3M upgrade, with staged restoration and reopening across roughly the next eighteen months. Como House also closes 25 September, 3 November and 18 December 2026.
National Trust of Australia (Victoria)
CLOSED. The lease ran out and the last night was Sunday 21 June 2026, after a month of farewell shows. Ticket sites and gig roundups still carry it. It was at 133 Sydney Road in Brunswick, not Collingwood, so do not confuse it with the Smith Street rooms.

CLOSED on 21 June 2026, the same night Stay Gold shut — they shared a building, an operator and a lease. Time Out, OpenTable and Tripadvisor all still list it and its own website now returns a server error.

CLOSED in March 2026, ten years almost to the month after it opened — Gunn chose to finish rather than being pushed out. The Ides website and the Time Out listing are both still live, so it still reads as trading.

CLOSED since December 2022 — Bax could not renew the lease under a new landlord and has not reopened it anywhere. The catch is that baramericano.com is still live and still advertises Thursday to Saturday trading, and Time Out still has a listing. The 2023 Samu tea sittings were a one-off event, not a reopening.

CLOSED. Its own site is now a single page reading "thank you for 20 years of service - that's a wrap", with the menu, bookings and what's-on pages all removed; that notice went up between mid-April and early May 2026. Time Out, Yelp and OpenTable still show it trading. The operator hints at something new, so treat the address as unknown rather than open.

CLOSED on 5 March 2025 after fourteen years, together with its CBD sister Bar Margaux. Time Out's page is still live and it still turns up on best-cocktail-bar lists written since.

GONE, and the address has now been through four names. The Punters Club closed in 2002 and the room became Bimbo Deluxe; Bimbo became Kewpie, which closed in 2024; the space was gutted and reopened later that year as The Punters Club again, reviving the name it carried in the nineties. Yelp and the phone directories still list Bimbo Deluxe there.

Still trading, at a different address from the one every listing carries.
MOVED, not closed. It left 386 Rathdowne Street in October 2025 after almost twenty years and reopened on 19 November 2025 at 920 Lygon Street, Carlton North, in the old Enoteca Sileno — a much bigger room with a dining space and a private room. Maps and review sites still send people to Rathdowne Street.

Trading under a new name
The hardest kind to catch: the address is still busy, so a maps result looks correct, and the booking is under a name that no longer exists.
RENAMED AND REBUILT, not gone. The Gaso announced its closure in February 2025 and traded for the last time on 31 March 2025. The building reopened on 24 July 2026 as the Smith St Hotel under Scott Pickett, still a live music room with gigs booked by Yours and Owls, at the same address of 484 Smith Street. A booking made for "the Gaso" will not exist.

RENAMED. It closed in 2024 and reopened in July 2025 after a $6.5M rebuild as Hickens Hotel — four levels, a rooftop, and the only Carlton Draught bar in the country. Same corner at 127 Russell Street, different pub and different beer, so a booking under the old name will not exist.

Rebuilt
Still there and still open, but changed enough that anything written before the works describes a different place.
REBUILT. Sand Hill Road spent close to a decade turning it into a seven-level venue — public bar and beer garden downstairs, the South East Asian dining room PAST / PORT on level two, a rooftop cocktail bar above — and it reopened in November 2025. Only the heritage facade survives, so anything written before then describes a pub that no longer exists.

How this stays true
Every entry carries the date or the period it was established, because a closure without one decays into a rumour. Reopening dates slip — two of the galleries here have already moved theirs once — so a date on the page is the date somebody checked, not a promise.
